A Bridge

I stood at the sea,
Looking skyward at bridges,
Unfinished, empty

No permit issued
To put supports in the sand,
They rusted away

Sand backfilled the holes,
Somehow this is a good thing,
A new day, fresh start

Strung above me now
An engineering wonder
Has started anew

How far must I dig
Beneath the unstable sands
To find bedrock?

How strong are the strands?
Cars might fall into the sea!
Paralyzing fears

Before I build it
I kneel down and pray to You,
Help me find the rock!

I see the city
Shining there across the sea,
And now I must build.

This Senryu cycle was inspired by a dream I had last night.

If you stare at the ground wondering how deep the bedrock is, then the digging takes longer to get done. You've got the heavy machinery. You'll hit it sooner than you think.

A beautiful poem, Cat, and a magnificent photo.

I love holy/holey stones. I have three stones/rocks with holes made by water, a great metaphor for the value of overcomeing hardness with softness.

One of my small stones has three tiny holes made by dripping water over God knows how long---and I made it into a necklace. Blessings!

Hi Cat,

It's amazing how we build with our eyes, souls and dreams what's in our minds, hidden deep inside so we can touch it after we feel it.

One of your best poems.

Your bridge will be built before you know it.

You are a strong person with a lot of support around you.

Okay, I totally dig the Senryu. And absolutely love the pic.

But I wish you a sound sleep. Be strong and strike.

Fabulous! I'm amazed your poem was inspired by a dream, and not by the photo, as they fit together so well.

Beautiful poem!! Excellent questions. I love the details, too. I would love to hear the dream that inspired this wonderful piece. This is awesome:

"Sand backfilled the holes,
Somehow this is a good thing,
A new day, fresh start

Strung above me now
An engineering wonder
Has started anew"...

Yes, you are a strong person, Cat. I can feel your strength in these lines. As always, I love your work!

Wow, this must have been a remarkably intense dream--I can read its tension, fear, and determination like descending layers in the sand. You're already getting closer to that bedrock here.

I love the lines Julie pointed out, too.

You are a bridge-maker in words and action. Now keep digging. ;)

Pushing away the past to move forward is a move in the right direction.

I am connecting this to finding the inner-conscience!

Good job! Keep writing!!!

Fascinating!! I really like the structure of the senryu. I am not so familiar with it - so, thank you for this very illustrative poem.

Love how this ends - you seeing your goal and working towards it. This dream begs to be analyzed!

Enthralling, as always!

Cat, this looks like Sedona, AZ! Beautiful color and compo. And your words perfect. Must have been, I hope, a wonderful dream.

Jason-Thanks! I just gotta get some oil for the rig!

Shadow- So true, although these arches do occasionally break, in fact I think that just happened recently.

Cat-Indeed!

Marion-We have that in common! I had a substantial collection, but I left them in California when I moved. My mother has most of them. I spend a lot of my time at beaches of oceans and rivers, bent over and looking for unusual stones that have been shaped by water.

Khaled-Dreams have always fascinated me, I love them for the sheer adventure, and also for the messages. So very interesting. Thank you so much for your words here. :-)

Piratedred-Indeed it will, I think I'm at an excellent turning point to get building. :-)

Rachel- I know, I was wishing I had pictures of bridges, like the ones in my dream, but then I looked at my collection and this one just jumped out. It took about 25 seconds to find. :-)

Julie-Pretty much most of the dream is what you see here in the poem, with a bit more adventure and drama just to make it more fun to watch! There was a church scene, probably inspired by the fact that I just saw Godspell last night, performed by a local company, so that part of the dream was very lively and full of dancing. It was quite the night. :-)

Sarah- And we thought our awake dreams were wild! ;-)

K. Well, usually they are only one stanza, rather like the haiku, but I like to break rules, so there you go, a whole cycle. The poem was my way of analyzing the dream, and I found it pretty useful! I think I'm going to do that more often, I really enjoyed the process and gained a lot from it. :-)

Mom's Friend, well not AZ, but not too far off, that shot is from Arches Nat'l Park, just outside of Moab, UT. The entire area is full of these amazing red rocks, and is a geologist's (and photographer's) dream. There are a lot more shots of the whole region on my website www.catvibe.com. It was an awesome dream! :-)

Aniket- You can come work with me anytime. As long as you don't mind a little hard labor! ;-)

BrosReview- Indeed it is that very connection, something I must admit to having a pastime with. I think its in the blood. And yes, let us put the past behind us and move forward, good advice we get from dreams! :-)

Writing this Senryu was a great way to analyse your dream Cat.

I'm not sure if we'll ever find bedrock but we have to keep on trying.

But your last stanza gives a lot of hope that you'll find what you're seaching for.
Never give up!

Having met you makes a great difference in reading you.

Totally unassuming in person, you write out really little gems for my thought, and my enjoyment--and for others also of course, of course!!!

Thanks you, girl!
Peace.

Beautiful, intriguing poem, Cat.
And interesting to find out more about senryu.

Just build, Cat, and go forward. I'm thinking that if we're looking too long for a bedrock, it'll be too late to build the bridges...

Ahhh, dreams, love that you've created this from your dream. So interesting and unique.

Love the red rocks in AZ (lived there 2x), though have never been to Utah. Someday though!

have a great week, my Sis! and tell me if you have been painting?

Wonderful, perceptive. Building
a bridge across the human heart
to a richer, more fully lived
life. Tentative and yearning and
yet determined.
Excellently written, Cat.

Sorry about that. I really must check my comments more thoroughly before posting them. I enjoyed my visit, as I always do. The poem, though, is something special, I think.

If we only knew the answer to that one, Cat!

This must have been a fascinating dream, and like some of the others, I am not familiar with senryu, so thanks for the intro.

love this. almost overwhelming - but there is a comfort in work - or at least some kinds of work - when the act of building becomes more than what's being built. in a good way.
